Electrical Safety and Insulation Upgrades
Mandatory Electrical Inspections For Insulation
Importance of Electrical Inspections for your Insulation Installation
When installing insulation, it’s crucial to prioritise electrical safety. Engaging a qualified electrician to conduct an inspection ensures that your wiring and components can safely coexist with the insulation.
Electrical Inspections are a Mandatory Requirement
Electrical inspections are mandatory for all insulation installations, regardless of the type of insulation or location. Do not compromise your safety by working with contractors who neglect this essential step.
Understanding Cable Ratings and Insulation
The amount of power that can safely flow through your electrical cables depends on the type of insulation surrounding them. Cables fully encased in insulation have different heat dissipation capabilities than those with partial insulation.
AS3008:2009 and Power Limitations
Recent updates to the Australian Standard for Electrical Wiring (AS3008:2009) have reduced the allowable power for older wiring when fully surrounded by insulation. For example, a standard 2.5mm V75 power circuit can handle 20 amps with batt insulation but only 13 amps with loose insulation.
Avoiding Circuit Tripping
Reducing circuit breakers to 13 amps can lead to frequent tripping in high-load areas like kitchens. To address this, consider:
- Installing New Circuits: Running dedicated circuits to high-load areas can alleviate the burden on existing circuits.
- Replacing Insulation: Removing loose insulation and replacing it with batt insulation can increase the allowable power rating.
