Insulation Installation Electrical Safety Inspection Reports for Homes in Canberra
Ensuring the safety of your property and its occupants is crucial before embarking on any insulation upgrade in Canberra. An electrical check conducted by licensed electricians to assess potential risks and ensure compliance with safety standards. This inspection is not only a prerequisite for insulation work but is essential for safeguarding against fire hazards and electrocution. Here’s a breakdown of the process and the subsequent steps for property owners.

Electrical Safety Inspection:
Licensed electricians conduct a comprehensive inspection to identify unsafe wiring, damaged or exposed wires, and incorrectly rated wiring in the property.
- Evaluation of potential adverse effects of insulation installation on electrical wiring or circuits, with consideration for the installation of a Residual Current Device (RCD) if necessary.
- Examination of light fixtures, especially the replacement of halogen downlights with IC-4 rated LED downlights to mitigate fire risks associated with heat generation.
- The electrician provides a safety check report outlining any identified electrical risks that must be addressed before insulation upgrades.
- After rectification, the electrician issues a Certificate of Electrical Safety, a mandatory document submitted to the ACT Government for compliance.
Review Your Roof Insulation Assessment Report:
Concise and understandable reports provided by Alexander Watson Insulation include photos of the internal roof area, the condition of current insulation, and recommendations for any required upgrades.

Checklist for Landlords and Property Owners in the ACT:

- Book a Roof Insulation Inspection:
- For properties built since 1997, check the Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) in the property contract to assess insulation standards.
- If insulation has been disturbed or upgraded, hire a certified installer to determine current insulation levels.
- Safety tip: Avoid entering the roof space yourself.
Book an Electrical Inspection:
If the assessment report indicates the need for an insulation upgrade, book an electrical inspection to address any identified issues.

Our Clients Love us

The retrofit guide published by Alexander Watson and handed over to us in the initial meeting, under “other necessary electrical work”, encourages customers to use their electrical services while the team is on site for other electrical jobs around the house. We wanted a sensor light installed, however, the electrician who conducted the electrical safety inspection initially did not agree with this. We had to persevere to get the sensor light installed, which was a little disappointing.
That said, we have already noticed a big improvement in indoor temperature, especially during the recent hot days and we are very pleased with the insulation upgrade overall.

We could feel the difference in temperature the day after the ceiling insulation went in and it does such a good job keeping the house cooler on hot days. We look forward to the house being much easier to keep warm when winter rolls around too. The ducted AC unit that was recommended to us works really well, is very quiet and the controller is easy to use or can be controlled with an app.
Would definitely recommend Alexander Watson, they know their stuff.

Insulation is excellent but the service and staff are what you pay for, they're all super friendly and helpful.
Insulation went smoothly over 2 days, you get what you pay for, premium service and super nice staff.
4 months post install we had an issue with a leak from the condensation pipe of our aircon in the roof, hadn't turned it on since insulation was installed so wasn't aware.
Wally from AWI came out 2 days later and fixed it on the spot.
Always a warm reception when calling, after instal service is amazing. Can't recommend enough.

We noticed an instant 3 degrees Celsius improvement in the house overnight. In the warmer part of the day, the house is much cooler.
They also had to follow up as they had forgotten to turn the solar back on during install. They were there the next day and had it sorted within an hour.
Additionally, post the install, it rained, there was a water leak through the range hood in the kitchen. Since they were last in the roof, I rang them, they came out in 15min, diagnosed the problem as a cracked tile that had been cracked by someone else and fixed with bathroom silicone, and that they had potentially disturbed the previously dodgy fix up job that they hadn’t seen by walking near it. So, even though it wasn’t something they did, they fixed it by replacing that tile and sealing the range hood exhaust properly. No extra charge. Amazing! Highly recommend this company to insulate your home.

To be honest, the experience was not a great one.
First point to raise is the constant email replies from different admin stuff. After correspondence with one team member, the following reply would be from a different team member. I found this frustrating. And then that new team member has not read the previous email (this would also be in a working day time frame).
Now the point to raise is of quality of work, they had only cleaned approx 80% of the ceiling, they spent 2 days (a Thursday and Friday). I know this because I cleaned the remaining missed areas including removing old batts on my Saturday so I could lay the insulation properly myself. If I hadn’t of laid the insulation myself and Alexander Watson returned to re-install, then I feel the missed areas would still remain and they would just install over the top. Additionally approx 6 tiles were broken, and they were only siliconed back together.
Now after email correspondence, and I assume with the manager, being told as a customer I should of raised my concerns on the Saturday so this company can return to do a quality check, I feel this should of been done at the workers level before they would of left the job site, then possibly another senior team member should of visited the job site post completion to confirm the work is done. This process has failed from the lowest part of the team. I’ll attach photos to this review.
Now we have both come to an agreement to a reduction in the invoiced amount.
Insulation FAQ’s
Removing insulation from a ceiling might be necessary for many reasons, such as renovations, pest issues, installing new insulation, electrical safety and health. For more information see our insulation removal page here.
Cross-hatching two layers of insulation results in a substantial improvement in insulation efficiency. For more information about cross-hatching, download our Retrofit Guide here.
It all depends on the type of roof and the ceiling cavity. Usually batts are the best option, however in some cases a loose insulation or other specialised product might be a more effective solution.
When the installers are doing wall insulation they will drill small holes under the windows to ensure all parts of the wall is being insulated. The drill holes are 16mm in diameter and are drilled in between the bricks. To fill them in we use mortar. If your mortar is not a standard grey, our team will aim to get the colour as close as possible to leave a seamless finish.
Installing cavity wall insulation can make electrical work more challenging. We recommend completing any wiring or electrical work before installing cavity wall insulation. Insulation doesn’t block access entirely, electricians can add wiring in at a later stage using a fibreglass straw rod, though it’s more complex than in an empty cavity. However, any insulation related electrical compliance work will need to be completed before the wall insulation is installed.
